SOLACE Annual Conference 2009

SOLACE Annual Conference 2009: Challenging Behaviour – Is It Crunch Time for your Council’s Credit?

Date: 20th – 22nd October 2009

Venue: The Brighton Centre, Brighton

The year 2009 looks like being an interesting one ... The economy is slowing. The global financial system is facing a crisis unprecedented in our lifetime. The political environment is also changing, in different ways in the UK’s different countries. At the same time it becomes ever clearer that our individual and collectives habits and lifestyles are unsustainable. We borrow too much, we eat and drink too much, and we use too much carbon.

These factors pose significant and daunting challenges to us as citizens and as senior local government leaders. So what is to be done? Can we change our behaviour – as citizens, as consumers and as public bodies – to meet these challenges? What can we do as leaders, regulators and storytellers to challenge others to lead their lives in more sustainable ways? We all know that the outcomes of public services depend on the ways in which the public use those services, but in what ways can we get real leverage across diverse populations and communities. What do we have to do about our own behaviour as a sector to enable citizens to value our role and our brand?

The SOLACE conference 2009 in Brighton will provide a unique opportunity for SOLACE members to explore these challenges and to learn from each other. We will also be organising the conference in a different way to maximise the amount of interaction and choice you have as delegates.
